Oryx, 55, 73 - 80. https://doi.org/10.1017/s0030605318001370 85 conservation programmes are protecting 147,000 nesting females, primarily in Brazil. The top six sites harbour > 100,000 females and should be prioritized for conservation action. Abundance declines with latitude and we found no evidence of human pressure on current turtle abundance patterns. It is presently not possible to estimate the global population trend because the species is not monitored continuously across the Amazon basin. The number of females is increasing at some localities and decreasing at others. However, the current size of the protected population is well below the historical population size estimated from past levels of human consumption, which demonstrates the need for concerted global conservation action. The data and management recommendations compiled here provide the basis for a regional monitoring programme among South American countries. |

"Illegal trade in wild cats and its link to Chinese‐led development in Central and South America." Conservation Biology, 34, 1525 - 1535. https://doi.org/10.1111/cobi.134981000 seized wild cats (jaguar [Panthera onca ], puma [Puma concolor ], ocelot [Leopardus pardalis ]) from 19 Central and South American countries and China. We ran generalized additive mixed models to detect trends in wild‐cat seizures from 2012 to 2018 and assess the effects of socioeconomic factors of source countries and between those countries and China on the number of wild cats seized. Jaguar seizures increased over time, and most of the seized jaguar pieces were canines (1991 of 2117). Around 34% (32 of 93) of the jaguar‐part seizure reports were linked with China, and these seizures contained 13‐fold more individuals than those intended for domestic markets. Source countries with relatively high levels of corruption and Chinese private investment and low income per capita had 10–50 times more jaguar seizures than the remaining sampled countries. The number of Chinese residents in Central and South America was not significantly related to number of jaguars seized. No socioeconomic factors influenced the seizures of puma and ocelots. Legal market chains may provide structure for the illegal chain; thus, the influx of illegal jaguar products is potentially a side effect of the economic partnership between Central and South American countries and China. Poverty and high levels of corruption in the source countries may motivate local people to engage in illegal activities and contribute to the growth of this trade. Supply‐side interventions to curb this threat to Neotropical wild cats may include improved training for officials and promotion of governance and the value of protecting these animals to local people. |

While literature indicates that historical population declines have occurred, most duiker populations appear relatively healthy in monitored parks. Our results indicate that these parks are effective in protecting most duikers despite hunting pressure. We recommend that systematic, standardized camera-trap monitoring be initiated in other African parks in combination with point-abundance models to objectively assess forest ungulate population trends. |

In seven of the bats, we detected RNA most closely related to sequences of the human common cold coronaviruses 229E or NL63 (>80% nucleotide identities). A demonstration farm was built in the village of Epulu, 38 people were trained in PWL farming techniques and farming materials for hh farms were distributed. One bin of breeding palm weevils and substrate, costing $3.20 USD, can produce 75 edible larvae (0.5 kg) every month. Thus, a small-scale PWL farmer harvesting 20 bins monthly can yield 10 kg PWL, bolstering hh nutrition. At $0.10 USD/larvae, this same farmer can make a net profit of $86 USD/month, compared to $45 USD/month for a commercial hunter. PWL farming is a promising approach to provide alternative livelihoods and year-round access to a preferred protein to communities surrounding critical wildlife habitat in the DRC and beyond. |

Based on this criterion, gaur and sambar occupied 28 and 50% of suitable habitat in WEFCOM, and banteng occupied 57% of suitable habitat in HKK. We used our models to assess the effectiveness of two hypothetical conservation initiatives. First, we modeled the impact of decreasing human activities around nine villages in the core of WEFCOM, which increased predicted suitable habitat in WEFCOM to 68 and 75% for guar and sambar. We also modeled the extent of potential banteng habitat that still remains in the other 16 protected areas. This could result in a 4-fold increase in banteng suitable habitat in WEFCOM. This is the first study to use occupancy surveys to determine where large prey species can be restored to support management to increase the distribution of tigers, and potentially fill a half-full tiger landscape. |

Consequently, parrotfish abundance appeared to be controlled by the ecology of these patch reefs rather than fishing mortality. We suggest that the high and persistent cover of late-successional algae reduces the renewal rates of algae, which had negative consequences for all studied parrotfish populations. Low ocean currents and physical energy in the lagoon appeared to promote algal persistence. Thus, parrotfish bans may be more effective in promoting reef recovery in environments that promote rapid algal turnover. Fisheries regulations are unlikely to rapidly restore hard corals on these patch reefs, which have slowly transitioned to algal dominance since first described in 1970. |

Conservation Biology, 34, 1525 - 1535. https://doi.org/10.1111/cobi.134981000 seized wild cats (jaguar [Panthera onca ], puma [Puma concolor ], ocelot [Leopardus pardalis ]) from 19 Central and South American countries and China. |

Frequencies in Kelp Gull nests were in general relatively low, ranging between 3.3 and 37.5%, and differed significantly among colonies. No relationship was found between frequency and distance to urban centres. Debris were recorded with frequencies of less than 19.2% in nests of Olrog's Gulls (L. atlanticus), Dolphin Gulls (L. scoresbii), Imperial Cormorants (Leucocarbo atriceps) and Magellanic Penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus), but not in nests of Neotropical Cormorants (Nannopterum brasilianus), Rock Shags (Leucocarbo magellanicus) and Southern Skuas (Catharacta antarctica). This information obtained along a wide coastal sector provides a baseline for future monitoring. |

Scientific Reports, 12, e3767. https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-022-07562-0 1) was mostly present in codons of the Complex I (NADH genes), supported by two different codon-based methods at the ND1 and ND4 in the most divergent lineages, the eastern gentoo penguin from Crozet and Marion Islands and the southern gentoo penguin from Antarctica respectively. Additionally, ND5 and ATP6 were under selection in the branches of the phylogeny involving all gentoo penguins except the eastern lineage. Our study suggests that local adaptation of gentoo penguins has emerged as a response to environmental variability promoting the fixation of mitochondrial haplotypes in a non-random manner. Mitogenome adaptation is thus likely to have been associated with gentoo penguin diversification across the Southern Ocean and to have promoted their survival in extreme environments such as Antarctica. Such selective processes on the mitochondrial genome may also be responsible for the discordance detected between nuclear- and mitochondrial-based phylogenies of gentoo penguin lineages. |
